‘It looks really painful though…and certainly not something small either…doesn’t it hurt?’

“Nah, it doesn’t hurt. I’ll be fine and heal up in a couple weeks. Thank you for the concern though, Kin. That’s very sweet of you.”

Rebecca gave him a warm hug in return for being concerned for her health before heading back to the fridge to get out the milk and hot cocoa mix.

Kin’s curiosity got the better of him, slowly taking her hand in his and unwrapping the bandages that covered her hand. And…well…

Let’s just say that that was not what Kin would’ve liked to see. Her skin was burned and red all over, for crying out loud!

‘What did you do???’

Rebecca covered her hand, looking off to the side a bit.

“It was an accident, Kin. A little one I look after was helping me in the orchard and didn’t know not to squeeze the small red berries in the first row. It got it away from them in time for the skin to pop and the juice got on my hand.

Cheri berries are well known to cause mild third-degree burns if handled improperly. The juice is spicy enough to cause harm to unprotected skin.”

She carefully rewrapped her hand in the cloth bandages, opening and closing it to show that her hand would be fine.

‘Yes, very.’

And now, he shall wait patiently where he sat, playing with his hands a few seconds before he noticed the other’s own bandaged hand, not noticing her question at all.

‘…What happened to your hand?’

“My han-”

“Oh! Yes, this was just a small accident about a week ago, no worries it’s not serious.”

She closed the fridge to walk over to Kin and offered him her bandaged hand so he could look for himself.

‘…That. Does not sound pleasant.’ Well, looks like Kin wasn’t going to let that happen ever. Good.

He smiled just a little, gently taking her hand with his unbandaged one. Not before putting his gloves back on though, he couldn’t bear to be seen by other people without them otherwise.

“Well the good thing is that I was able to disinfect and treat it.”

Rebecca gently squeezed his hand before leading him to the kitchen and sitting him down before going over to the counter and fridge. She pulled her orchard gloves off and put them to the side, forgetting about the bandages on her own hand.

“Do you like whole, skim or soy milk?”

‘Oh.’ was his small answer as he felt her pet him when she pulled off the apron, the hedgehog blinking a few times to readjust his eyes to the sudden light.

‘Is infec…ted a bad thing? I would like a hot cocoa very much. Yes I would.’

“Yes, it’s a very bad thing, Kin. I don’t know how to describe it otherwise but if it got infected, the skin would go yellow to purple then black if not treated. Y’could’ve lost that hand, y’know.”

Rebecca gently pet his quills a bit more before packing up the first aid kit and holding out her hand.

“Alright then. Let’s go to the kitchen then, I’ll whip up a nice warm mug of cocoa.”

‘But doe help always hurt?’

He leaned into the comforting hand, the pain now lessening great as the bleeding slowed.

‘How long will it take to heal?’ was his next question as he impatiently waited for her to finish wrapping his hand in the bandages.

“Generally when the wounds are big enough to be a problem, yes.”

Once Rebecca was finished wrapping his hand, she gently pet his head with a small smile, pulling off the apron that blocked his view of his hand.

“Weeks, possibly months if this got infected before I could put the extract on it. Hmm… As a reward for being a good patient, I think I’ll make you some hot cocoa. How’s that sound, Kin?”

‘Why does the help hurt?’

Rebecca was done with that it seems, the stinging was still there but not as much, feeling her hand on his head as she held the gauze against his hand. Ah, he preferred that to what he is feeling right now. Much nicer than pain.

“Because it’s gotta hurt before it can start healing. I did my best to be gentle, I’m sorry the Rawst extract stung, Kin.”

Rebecca gently rubbed Kin’s head to help comfort him as she kept the gauze pressed against the bleeding. When the bleeding stopped, she wrapped the soft cloth bandages around his hand to cover up the burn.
