“…Sorry. I can’t feel good about telling a lie. They can come off, I just really really don’t wanna take them off. They’re very important to me, and I don’t want to risk anything either. I’ve never practiced my psychokinesis while at full power. I can’t control it.”

Rebecca looked thoughtful for a moment before standing up and going over to the sink, handing Silver the gloves.

“Wear these over your gloves. Once you’re all clean, I’ll let you have the bathroom to yourself so you can wash them the way you’d like.”

“For your cuffs, I’ll find some metal cleaner so you can get the blood off those. That sound good to you?”

“I can’t take off my gloves. I can’t. I really can’t take them off. They’re uh… attached! Yeah! They’re attached to my hands and impossible to take off!”

That was a pitiful excuse, but it was the first thing that came to mind. Just the thought of taking off his gloves had him shaking a little. “B-Besides, I might accidentally mess something up. I don’t have as much control on my powers without them. I’ve never really practiced without my cuffs to limit how strong I am.”

She looked at him with a raised eyebrow at that, vaguely wondering what the hell they were doing to children in the future.

“That’s actually kinda disturbing.”

“Just to clarify, the cuffs are attached to the gloves too? Y’can’t just cut the gloves off the cuffs, right?”

The former champion wondered if she could get a bowl of bleach and wash the gloves that way.

“…Take off my gloves?”

Just the thought was terrifying. His gloves weren’t white anymore. They were stained red from when he had been applying pressure to the wound. The only thing that didn’t appear stained, was the glowing markings on the gloves. That was because they weren’t actually imprinted on them.

“N-No, it’s alright. I don’t need to take off my gloves.”

Rebecca was busy filling the tub, the water cloudy, green and smelling like green tea.

“Hun, y’can’t go in the tub with those on. They’re covered in blood. The gloves on the sink are thick and waterproof if y’gotta have somethin’ on your hands.”

“Would you really wanna soak in a tub with blood floating around in it? I promise I’ll wash them as best I can, okay?”

She wasn’t paying attention to what Silver was doing, making sure the water was warm enough for him.

“I don’t know. I don’t know anything about soaps, and I’m not all that experienced on cleaning, either. We don’t have that kinda stuff back home.”

But he did as he was asked, and followed.

“Good thing I’ve got years of experience to help you out, Silv.”

She turned on the light in the bathroom and got a stool ready for Silver to sit on.

“If there’s no blood on your hands under your gloves, I can just wash the gloves for ya. There’s a pair of work gloves on the sink if you want to wear those while I get the blood outta your fur.”

"Y’need any help, Silv? I’ve got some pretty good soaps in the bathroom.”

image

“I don’t know. I’ve only used soap once or twice in my life.”

“I’ll help out then, I just got a few herbal ones that smell wonderful, if you’d like to try them.”

“Follow me, ‘kay?”

The trainer motioned Silver to follow her as to walked to the bathroom of her home.

“Thank you.”

The day didn’t seem so bad anymore. So many wonderful people had stepped in to pick him up while he was down, and Silver was more receptive to their kind words than he used to be. “The same goes for you. I’ll always be here, even if I vanish. As long as you don’t forget me, I’ll still be with you.”

“I’ll never forget you, Silv.”

“Never ever.”

With that, she gently squeezed her best friend in her arms. Somehow she had been able to hear what he said, perhaps because of the close proximity.

Such kind words. Everyone always gave him so many kind words. Why was he always so emotionally fragile? Maybe it was time to toughen up. The hug was more than accepted. Silver allowed his body to relax, and he just stood there, savoring every second he got of that physical affection. It was meaningful.

Special.

Rebecca softly whispered as she hugged her best friend, not trusting her voice not to yell.

“You’re my best friend, Silv. No amount of scared humans’ll change that either.”

“I’ll always be here for you, so y’can have a shoulder to lean on when you’re tired. I promise.”

“…Sorry.”

Defeated, he hung his head, a heavy frown on his face. Silver took in a breath, and released, raising a shaky hand, and accepting the other’s gesture of kindness.

“It just… doesn’t feel like it. Maybe I’m being selfish, I don’t know. I’m just really confused right now.”

"It’s okay, Silv.”

Rebecca got up on her knees and gently pulled Silver into a warm hug.

“You have the right to be selfish. You have the right to be confused. You have the right to feel whatever your heart feels. I’ll be here for you all the way.”

She took off her headphones, revealing faint, faded scarring inside them. Rebecca was quiet now, unable to hear the other unless he yelled.

“But you’re still human. No matter what may be wrong, you’re still human. I’m a hedgehog.” Silver was conditioned to believe being human automatically made someone above him. That was how the world worked where he was from, it was hard for him to adjust to something new.

“…You’re way too kind to me. I don’t deserve it.”

“And you can think, speak and act of your own free will. I honestly see nothing wrong with that. To me, you’re as much as my friend as Triton is and I wouldn’t do a thing to change that. You’re your own person and I wish to treat you as such.”

Rebecca offered her hands to her friend, still knelt on the ground.

“Silv. I believe you do deserve it. You deserve kindness beyond measure. A hug and a home is what I can offer you.”

“Why would you wanna talk to me? You’re a human. You’re above me.”

”…Hun, if you’re speaking literally, I’ve got some things to tell you…“

The former champion was attempting to cheer things up with a small joke, her eyebrow twitching giving it away. She knelt down on front of her friend, making it clear that she wasn’t ‘above’ anyone.

"I want to talk to you because you’re my friend. Do I really need any other reason? And I doubt that you’re ‘above’ me, Silv. I’m just a little girl who needs equipment to be able to hear.

You have powers, you’re from the future, as crappy as it is, you’re brave, strong and you’re one of my very best friends.”
