“Great!”

Words honestly couldn’t describe his absolute excitement over this. Oh, he was going to have a lot of berries, and fruits, and all kinds of plants when he had his own place to live! The hedgehog gave a confident nod to her question.

“Sure! And if it starts to take too long, I can always use my psychokinesis to get more than one at a time.”

“As long as it’s done carefully, go right ahead, Silv.”

“You can take the other side of the tree if you’d like and we can go down the row like that. It’ll definitely be quicker.”

Rebecca started on her side, carefully picking berries one by one off the tree. Already she was seeing small buds for next week’s harvest under the leaves.

Twist off. He could remember that. To show that he understood, Silver replicated her motions. He carefully held onto one of the branches, twisting off the berry, just as she had done. What should have been a mundane task was a lot of fun. Something he definitely wanted to help out with.

“Did I do it right?”

“Lessee…”

Rebecca took one look and was very impressed, nodding with a bright smile.

“Perfect! Y’got it on your first try.”

The champion looked like she was very proud of him.

“Alright, ready to get the rest of the tree? There’s about ten to fifteen berries on each side, depending on how many grew this week.”

Orchards were beautiful. This was the kind of place he wanted to live. Well… he couldn’t figure out the kind of place he wanted to live! On one hand, there was the beautiful nature. A place like this. On the other hand, there were cities, which were beautiful in their own regard. How was someone supposed to choose?

“Yeah, I’m ready! I’ll be super careful and follow your instructions. That way none of the berries will get hurt!"

"Alright then! Let’s start with the Oran row.”

Rebecca went up to the first Oran tree in the row and put down the basket so she could demonstrate how to pick them without damaging the berry. She carefully pulled a branch down so he could see her hold the stem and twist the berry off the stem. She put the berry in the basket and smiled at her friend.

“Like that. Y’got it?”

“Okay!”

It felt so special. It was just a basket, and it may have just been picking berries, but it felt so very special to him. Words didn’t describe his excitement as he started towards the orchard. “It’ll be lots of fun, and you’ll have lots of berries to eat!”

“We’ll both have lots of ‘em to eat. Each tree yields a lot of berries each week.”

Rebecca smiled bright as she walked towards the orchard, opening the gate to go inside. Inside the orchard were several rows of trees, each row made up of one kind of berry each.

“I know it’s a lot of trees but you ready? I’ll show ya how to pick ’em so none of ’em get damaged by the stems.”

“Alright! I’ve always wanted to know what it was like to harvest things you’ve grown. I didn’t grow them myself this time, but I’m sure it’d be a similar experience! Thank you for letting me help!”

“It’ll definitely be a good learning experience. And I’m very grateful for your help, Silv. Shall we head behind the house and to the orchard? Ah! Here.”

Rebecca gave Silver his own basket to put the berries in with a bright smile.

“I guess…”

Cue the whiny voice. He was in an odd place. He wanted to lose weight while still eating and not exercising. There wasn’t much of a way around that.

“Silv, it’s not that bad. I said a little bit each day until you can handle longer distances. Walk to a friend’s house, walk down the block, whatever you wanna do.”

Rebecca gently ruffles his quills. He was adorable.

“There are these amazing things that are green and sometimes they’re purple and they’re called grapes and I think they’re the most brilliant thing to ever be created. It feels like I could live off of them.

…It’s the exercise part that isn’t so much fun. I may or may not kinda avoid that…”

"Grapes? I’m not a big fan of those but I do have them once in a while. They’re quite good.”

“Then here’s a better idea. Make it part of your daily routine. Walk to somewhere every morning and walk back. That should be fine, yes?”
