“I feel like sleeping is all I’ve been doing lately. Sleeping, and eating, and watching someone else do a bunch of things that are too complicated for me to understand. It’s too rainy to try searching for anything. Getting sick would be even worse than having to stay inside on a rainy day.”

“You could play your violin or try to draw something-”

“You’re wearing the cloth I gave you?”

She hadn’t noticed it until now, Rebecca was a bit tired and she felt a bit bad for not noticing it until now.

“I guess. There isn’t really anything to do other than lie around on the floor and stare out the window.”

“Y’can always take a nap. That’s what I usually do on days like today.”

“I cuddle up with some of my friends and we all have a nap pile. Triton is quite the cuddler when he warms up to someone. Kinda like Marshmallow but warmer.”

"I kinda have to agree with you there, Silver. The rain seems less sad at night and it sounds very peaceful. I guess it really depends on the location.”

image

“Right now it just makes me sad. At first I liked it but now that I’m getting used to it I think I like the sun better.”

“During the day it can have a depressing effect like that, hun. I’d kinda like the sun to come out too, if only to cheer us up. At least it’s not icing over, right?”

“A violin? That’s an interesting name.” It sounded better than ‘wooden thing’. Nobody he had asked knew what it was called, but everyone seemed to enjoy the sound. On occasion, he had gotten food for playing it. …Although that was usually because it was thrown at him in self defense, but food was food. It beat stealing it.

The embrace caused him to jump. He hadn’t been expecting that at all. But it was warm, and Silver loved warm things. It wasn’t very long at all before he was smiling, his eyes having closed, his tail wagging just a bit. “Well,” He started. “I like him too.”

Silver could honestly warm up to just about anyone. He felt special in the knowledge that he seemed to be very well liked among residents of the past. “The warmth makes me sleepy…”

image

“It’s a strange name to be sure but I’m not the one who named it.”

Rebecca chuckled a bit at Marshmallows behavior. He had started to hum with his head next to Silver’s, plopping down on the ground. It seemed he wanted to roost there.

“I think it makes nearly everyone sleepy. Marshmallow can have that effect on people.”

The trainer also looked a bit sleepy from Marshmallow’s humming and she sat down next to the two.

“Yeah, it has strings that make noise. I used to use my fingers but then figured out you’re supposed to use this other thing.” It had taken him a very long time to figure that one out. “It sounds really pretty.” He couldn’t help but smile sheepishly. It was the truth, and it was part of his motivation. Fear was powerful. If people didn’t have to be scared, people wouldn’t be mean.

“I can’t just avoid them. I have to go back sometimes to make sure they haven’t gotten hurt. GUN isn’t very good at taking care of them, even though they like to say they are. I’m the only one who can protect them from the monsters.” Even if it meant getting yelled at. “I’ll be okay. You don’t have to worry about me.”

“Oh my gosh, it’s called a violin and it’s one of my favorite instruments.”

“I completely agree with you there, violins sound wonderful.”

Rebecca always adored the sound of a violin and the fact that it sounded pretty to him told her that he must’ve been skilled at it.

“If you have to, just be careful, okay? If any of them hurt you, let me know and I’ll give them a stern talking to.”

“And I’ll worry as much as I like. You’re a new friend, after all.”

Meanwhile Marshmallow was looking at Silver, tilting his head before trotting over to him. Silver was chirped at before the Altaria wrapped his wings around the hedgehog.

Rebecca had a hand over her mouth before speaking.

“I forgot to mention… if Marshmallow does that, he likes you.”

“That’s certainly the quickest I’ve seen him warm up to someone.”

“I don’t think that would be such a good idea…” It wasn’t as though they didn’t have reason. That was one of the few things he didn’t really blame anyone for. His lack of technique made for a sound that was grating to the ears. His interest in it wasn’t strong enough to feel encouraged to get better, not like it had been with the violin.

“Even Blaze asks me to stop whenever she hears it. But that’s okay ‘cause I have my wooden thing that makes pretty sounds.” His hands came to rest behind his back. “The people from my world just aren’t very nice. But it’s okay, they’re just scared. It’ll be better when everything is fixed.”

“Well, the offer’s open if you want to.”

And Rebecca could always take her headphones off whenever he wanted to sing.

“A wooden instrument? With strings and a chin rest?”

Could it have been a violin? How curious. When Rebecca heard that, she let out a quiet sigh, kneeling down and placing a gentle hand on his shoulder.

“Humans do stupid things when they’re scared. Like being mean to a kind person or hurting them with words they most likely don’t mean. I apologize on their behalf, Silver, but try to stay away from them until this is all over. I don’t want you to get hurt, okay?”

“Aren’t those white things made out of sugar?” That was what Silver had been told, at least. He had never actually tried one before. Whatever that thing was, it looked more like a cloud than food. Even if it did look like food, it would have probably been a better idea not to eat it.

“At least he sounds pretty. I kinda wish I could do that. Last time I tried singing people threw things at me.”

“They’re his wings, actually. They’re made out of cotton-like feathers.”

She did have to stifle a little giggle when Marshmallow squawked at the implication that his wings were edible. He flew down and landed next to Rebecca, whapping her head with his wing.

The trainer let out a yelp and rubbed her head, glaring at Marshmallow as he preened himself at the compliment.

“When you’re over here, you’re welcome to sing all you like. And that’s mean of them! I have half a mind to throw Marshmallow at them.”

“I’ll remember that.” One thing he never forgot, was an act of kindness. No matter how small, or seemingly insignificant. Something as simple as holding a door open was something that stuck out to him. This was no small act of kindness. A whole entire room!

All he could do was hope he would be around to see it. Silver had always believed life to be worth living. After seeing the way the world was supposed to look, it only strengthened his resolve. “I could never thank you enough.”

“Y’don’t have to, Silver. It’s my pleasure to give you a home.”

Right when she finished her sentence, her Altaria sung from up above before landing on a branch nearby. She glared at the Pokemon and he glared back.

“Lazy fluffball. I asked you to do a sweep of the area, not a flyby.”

“Silver, this is my lazy-butt Altaria. His name is Marshmallow.”

“I would definitely consider doing that.” He was a little too afraid to make any decisions, mostly because he didn’t know for sure whether he was still going to be around or not. But the idea of living near so much greenery, and getting to grow plants, it all sounded like the kind of life he wanted to live. When he didn’t have a world to save, of course. Once he had completed his mission, he was going to have a lack of purpose.

“I’ll have a room ready for ya when you decide. And let me know if you need any help against that ‘Iblis’ thing. I’ve got a few friends who can help out.”

A few Water-types never hurt to have around. Maybe Silver would become a trainer too.

“If this is the kinda stuff you get to see everyday, this is the kinda place I want to live if I get to.” The sunset was really pretty, he wouldn’t have minded getting to see that every day. “Time is a really weird thing. For all I know, I could survive. But if I survive I won’t have a home to go back to. It’ll be changed, and no one will know me.”

“You could live here, if that’s okay?”

Her large home in Undella always felt empty with only her there. Maybe having a roommate would liven things up. Either way, she would be praying for his survival. She hoped Arceus would grant him a second chance.

“You could help me take care of my Berry garden and start growing your own that way. I’ll teach you all sorts of things about this world too, if that’s alright with you.”
