Whoops. He had forgotten about that one. The color was one he hadn’t really seen before. Pink. It was a pretty color, however. Every color was pretty to him. He wasn’t nearly as reserved about this one as he had been about the other one. Instead of a quick little nibble like before, Silver took a big bite out of it.

Oh, this one was much different. It was a lot sweeter. Silver hummed in content, without even realizing it as he slowly chewed what was in his mouth. The juices were really sweet as well, and Silver absolutely loved sweet things. When that bite was finished, he licked his lips, before quickly taking another bite, and repeating the process.

This was amazing.

“Do you like it? Most of the berries I eat I grow myself.”

Rebecca looked a bit proud of this accomplishment. She was always excited when someone liked some of her home-grown berries.

“I’ve got a bunch of them in my bag if you want to take some home with you.”

The trainer munched on an Oran berry, humming at the taste.

“Gardening? Is that what it’s called?” So the process of growing flowers was called gardening. That was something he wanted to learn. Something he wanted to be great at. Just the thought of a field of flowers was a gigantic motivation. “…Oh!”

All this time he had been technically speaking with a total stranger. Whoops. This marked the very first human he had ever felt comfortable with. A human who was the exact opposite of everything he had ever known. “My name is Silver.” A sheepish little grin had taken place on his muzzle. “I like your name.”

image

“Yup, that’s what it’s called.”

Rebecca gave a chuckle as she closed her bag after taking out a few more berries for herself to snack on.

“Why thank you, Silver. I like your name too.”

Not to mention that silver was her favorite precious metal. This Silver seemed to be an absolute sweetie.

“Have you tried the Pecha berry yet? It’s pretty good, if I do say so myself. Go on and try it, it should be really soft by now.”

Silver’s head tilted at the object that was now in his hands. He was both confused, and fascinated. Dirt must have been a magical substance, or at least to him it seemed to be. The hedgehog was inspired to try and pay close attention whenever he saw dirt, regardless of whether it was actually good soil or not. Maybe there was something you could do to make it good.

“Oh… I like colors.” He also knew where he could get a good vase. Blaze talked about them all the time, and a Sonic alternate who had a tendency to constantly shatter them. Hopefully that was something that wouldn’t happen to his own. He would be sure to take very good care of it. Surely Blaze had an extra! “I can’t thank you enough for all the help you’re giving me. Before today, I didn’t know plants could be poisonous. I thought they were all good. But I didn’t know you could eat them, either!”

“While some are harmless, other colors can indicate that a plant is poisonous. So you’ve gotta be very careful.”

“I’m more than happy to help ya, hun. Y’look like you could do pretty well at gardening.”

Rebecca gave him a bright smile before looking like she remembered something.

“Oh dear, I never asked you for your name. I’m sorry about that.”

“My name’s Rebecca. What’s yours?”

“Transport soil?” Didn’t that mean to take something from one place, and put it in another? But how did you do that if soil was dirt? Silver had thought all dirt was the same, it certainly looked the same to him! But that must not have been the case. “It sounds hard but it sounds like fun, too. Kinda like the wooden thing that makes music.”

That had taken him an unimaginable amount of time. Much longer than just one year. But now that he was so good at it, playing the violin was one of the best recreational activities he could think of. “I’ve never had a book before, but I like pictures!”

“Yup. You put it in a container and carry it where you want to plant the tree. Here, I’ll give you one of my own soil containers.”

Rebecca went into her bag and took out a large aluminum can with a plastic top. Inside was soil filled to the top along with a few leaves for fertilizer. She carefully handed it to him with a smile.

“Here. This can get you started. If you can find a large pot or vase, you can grow it in there. And it can be a lot of fun if you like it. The pictures’ll definitely help then. They’re photos of poisonous plants so you know what do avoid. It’s even organized by petal and leaf color.”

Which was very useful to the trainer, as she roughed it in the wilderness quite a bit.

“Oh! So trees need healthy dirt!” Silver may have ha to ask a lot of questions, but that was how he got the answers he was looking for. That was how he learned. “A container?” He questioned, blinking a few times. Could he really grow something? Was it truly possible to help along the miracle of life?

Hopefully it wasn’t something that was too time consuming, which was what he immediately assumed it might be. But if it was small enough to fit into something as compact as a container, it couldn’t have been that much trouble, could it? Silver took a mental note that some foods could be poisonous. He hadn’t known that about plants. “I don’t know if I would be any good at doing something like that…”

“If you want the berries grown to be healthy and delicious, yes. And yes, a container. It’ll be able to hold the soil but I don’t suggest using it as a place to grow the berries. It’s only to transport the soil.”

Rebecca nodded, she was more than happy to answer his questions.

“Well, it takes a lot of practice to get good at it. Frustration, tears, all of those things. But once you’re good at it, it was worth the effort. As for the plants, I think I have a book on poisonous plants back home that I can lend you. It has pictures so you can identify them by sight.”

That explanation went right over his head. All he knew were trees, and flowers. Silver didn’t know what soil was. It never dawned on him that it was dirt. It was something that most people overlooked, although he still liked seeing it. Maybe not soft, like grass, but it had such a fascinating texture!

“I didn’t know you could eat flowers.” That was the impression he got. “Someday I want to learn this kinda stuff. When everything settles down, if I’m still alive, I want to learn how to make things grow.”

“It’s basically nutrient-rich dirt, hun. It helps for the tree’s health. I can get you a container of it if you wanna try growing your own berry tree.”

Rebecca ended up kneeling down again, her bag was getting heavy from just standing there. This way, she could get more berries if he wanted some more.

“Some flowers you actually can eat. It really depends, though. Some can be poisonous so y’gotta be careful. Berries in particular, however, are more like fruit than anything else. They’re healthy for your body and they give you lots of natural energy.”

“…Grew it?”

The concept of growing food was foreign to him. Silver knew about trees, and flowers, but that’s as far as his knowledge extended. He didn’t realize you could even grow those. As far as he knew, that was something that happened on its own. It was magical to him. “Yes.” He nodded, his smile returning. “It’s really good! But…” The smile faded, his head tilting in curiosity. “Does that mean it was on a flower or something?”

“Yup, right out of fertile soil.”

Rebecca had practically grew up around gardening and the like so she was used to the fruit-bearing trees. She had a thoughtful look on her face before nodding.

“In a way, yes. Berries like these grow on trees where I’m from. Some grow in the wild but others can only be home grown. Before it grows into a berry, it blooms a wonderful flower.”

holdingmyworldsdestiny:

The blue one was, so far, the most appealing. Blue was such a pretty color. A color that didn’t exist in his world at all, aside from his psychokinesis, and not even that produced a color as rich as this thing was. For a moment, he only stared at it. Memorizing the object’s form.

image

“It’s almost to pretty to eat.” He voiced, smiling at the object. But that wasn’t going to stop him. He was excited to discover a new taste. Silver brought the berry to his mouth, taking a quick bite out of it. Right away, his eyes widened. It was juicy, which felt absolutely wonderful against his dry mouth. It was kind of sweet, but kind of bitter at the same time. A perfect blend of both, which created a new taste entirely. Oh yes, he very much liked these things.

Silver licked his lips, his eyes closed, a rather wide smile stretching across his face.

“I grew it myself, actually. It took a while for it to get that blue. It means it’s perfectly ripe.”

Oh, Rebecca knew that face too well. He liked it! That warmed her heart quite a bit and it was an amazing compliment. The things she prided herself on were her ice sculptures and her ability to cultivate berries.

“Do you like it?”

holdingmyworldsdestiny:

Instincts told him to run away. That humans were, by nature, cruel. It was a feeling he had to fight back. Maybe he was thinking about this the wrong way? Maybe humans were completely different creatures when they weren’t living in constant fear. Maybe this behavior was something, not to be nervous of, but to embrace. To be thankful for.

Thoughts like that helped Silver to smile again. The idea that humans would be this kind when he finally managed to save his world. A shaky step forward as he accepted what was given to him. “Um… thank you.” His head was still bowed, but there was a hint of a smile.

image

“You’re welcome, hun. Those are actually two of my personal favorites so I’m more than happy to share ‘em with ya.”

Rebecca gave him a bright smile in return. He was nervous but she felt that he was a sweetheart. She hoped he’d like those berries. The trainer closed her back and stood back up, giving him a slight nod to say that it was okay to eat them.

“The blue one might be a little bit hard but it softens up when in body heat.”

“I-I don’t know what berries are.”

Although he was a little hungry. He didn’t get the chance to eat very often. Usually, he was a little too busy to focus on that. Silver had been getting better about it as of late, but he still had a ways to go before he had any kind of stable eating, and sleeping schedule. His head bowed, his hands a bit shaky.

“Y-You don’t have to do anything for me.”

“Berries are basically small snacks.”

Rebecca knelt down and went into her bag, taking out an Oran and a Pecha berry, offering them both to him with a small smile.

“It’s alright, hun. I wanna do somethin’ for ya. It’s the least I can do for making you feel uncomfortable. Sorry about that, by the way.”
