“That seems like a nice meaning. All my name means is some kinda metal. My parents were weird and named me after a metal. I know it’s considered precious where I live because it doesn’t melt as quickly, but it’s still weird.”

“My parents thought about it for a long time before I was born so I trusted that they gave me a good name and stuck with it til I was able to read the meaning”

“Y’know in this time period, silver is used to make jewelry. The stuff that some people wear around their necks and in their ears. I also wore silver earrings once upon a time. That’s why it’s considered precious. Because it’s harder than gold to bend and break. Gold’s more precious than silver but it’s one of the softest metals in existence so it’s not good metal if you want to make armor.”

“Yeah… I know. But I just don’t feel right accepting medical attention. The thought of taking medication feels wrong to me. It’s just how I was raised, it’s who I am. I’ll be okay. I used to get sick to my stomach a lot as a kid, and I’m still okay. I think that’s why my stomach is so sensitive now.”

He blinked a few times before placing the next one in his mouth, his lips curling into a smile.

“They’re really good.”

“How about stuff that wouldn’t be considered medication? Like natural remedies and stuff like that? And I think that would definitely explain it.”

Rebecca broke into a wide smile, putting the box of strawberries down and leaning against the counter.

“I’m glad you like ‘em, Silv. I actually got them fresh this morning from the market. If you’d like, you can try an apple or an orange today too.”

“That’s just how it works in my world. I’m not human. I’m abnormal. Therefore, I don’t deserve medical treatment. I’m used to it, that’s how I grew up. I had to take care of myself if I got sick, or injured. I was always all alone. My parents… weren’t there. They had to escape, or they would have been killed.”

With a sigh, he took one. To his surprise, it was actually pretty good. It was a little sweet, and a little bitter at the same time. A fascinating combination.

“What’s stupid about those people’s attitude is that Pokemon get their own hospitals in every single village, town and city in this world. And people here more than welcome abnormalness. Remember what I told you about those who are chosen by a legendary?

Regardless, I’d be more than happy to treat you if you get hurt. After all, I’m not a doctor so I wouldn’t fall under their definition of medical care. Oh, do you like it? It’s called a strawberry and it’s a fruit, like apples.”

Rebecca gave him a smile and handed him another one to eat.

“They’re distantly related to berries but far enough that they’re their own kind of food.”

“Yeahhhhh I know. No abusing time travel. But I wouldn’t be hospitalized. I’m a hedgehog. My kind aren’t allowed medical care. I know things are different in the past, but… I just don’t feel comfortable with it. It goes against everything I was raised to stand for.”

His eyes furrowed when he wasn’t given his bag back, but he followed along anyway.

Well, at least she hadn’t tossed it in the trash like she very much wanted to.

“‘Not allowed’… Whoever made that rule is a dipshit, pardon my language, because there are so many ways to get around it that it’s ridiculous. Family remedies, for example, would’t fall under it because they wouldn’t be given by a doctor.

Here, try this and tell me if it tastes good.”

The former champion took out a box of strawberries and handed one to Silver, a small one to start out just in case he didn’t like it.

“Uh…”

He blinked a few times. If they were expired, did that mean he couldn’t have anymore? That wasn’t a good thing at all. What was he going to do if he couldn’t eat cookies?

“Well… I can just go back to tomorrow and eat them all then. Then they won’t be expired.”

“Silv. You of all people should know time travel shouldn’t be abused like that. Not to mention that if you eat all of these, you will get sick. Possibly throw up or be hospitalized from food poisonin. I have something much better in the mean time for you to eat.”

Despite the box of cookies being expired, she still put them back in the bag as gently as she could. She gave him a smile and carefully hooked the bag onto one of the drawers, beckoning Silver to follow her to the fridge. She opened the door to show off her stocked shelves.

“I guess if you really wanna you can.”

Silver took the bag out of his quills, holding it out for her to take. That bag had practically become a lifeline for his stressful eating. The past few days had been really stressful.

“Thank ya, Silv.”

Rebecca took the bag as carefully as she could to avoid breaking any cookies. She took a box out and blinked. Girl scout cookies?

Can’t say she expected that. She carefully inspected the box for the expiration date. Then her face had a worried look. 6/21/2014.

“Silv, these expired yesterday. June 21st of this year was yesterday.”

“I don’t know. I can’t read. But they still taste really good, so I’m guessing they’re still okay.”

“Mind if I take a look at a box? Food poisoning risk raises past the expiration date so I want to make sure they’re alright to eat. Since they probably haven’t been in a fridge since you got them.”

“I haven’t played my violin in a while… before I could time travel, that had been my way of eliminating stress. I only got so good at it because I was playing it practically all the time.

I know…” Sigh. “I’m sorry.”

"You can play it to the music I’ll give ya. I’m sure it’ll sound wonderful, Silv.”

Rebecca gently ruffled his quills with a warm smile.

“It’s okay, Silv. And another thing, when do those cookies expire? There’s a little date that should be written on it that more than likely says ‘Best if used by;’ or something like that.”
