His smile felt a bit forced now, though it wasn’t really any fault of Rebecca’s. It just felt like… a lot? A lot that he was now suddenly in charge of that he hadn’t even been aware of.

Xav had been sad and now he wasn’t and it was because of Zach. Which meant that he, one Zach Wily, son of an abusive father and parent to a brother that he had barely managed to raise without a police record, was supposed to keep someone else happy. Zach Wily, the military disgrace who had been discharged after suffering ‘violent emotional trauma’ from just a little thing like having his leg blown off and being pinned out in the field for days, bodies of his (dead) comrades lying next to him, and all he could do was-

“Can I braid your hair one day?”

The small and innocent question had Zach blinking as he snapped back to the here and now. “Uh… maybe.” Making promises that he knew he couldn’t keep was something he wasn’t a fan of, and he wasn’t sure he would ever be seeing Rebecca.

This was. This was just too much. It wasn’t him. It wasn’t something that he could handle. Xav needed someone… different. Better. Stable.

“I, uh… I think I need to go.” Zach nodded as he straightened. “Just tell your dad that it was… nice meeting you.” Xav was still getting something ready upstairs, but Zach had no intention of sticking around long enough to find out what.

There was a faint clunking on the stairs in the background, and someone coming down the stairs.

Rebecca squinted up at Zach before wobbling and squeaking when her Dad patted her head from behind her. She hadn’t heard him approach, but she had been concentrating on listening to Zach.

“…?”

Xav crouched down and ruffled his daughter’s hair before speaking.

“Go on upstairs and play for a bit, okay? Be careful on the stairs.”

He stood up properly and gave Zach a small smile as Rebecca nodded and walked away, wobbling occasionally.

“She’s a curious one. Sorry for the delay. Ready to head out?”

iiregularhunters:

“Really?”

Zach smiled softly at that, and shifting as he did to move into a squatting position. It put him closer to eye level with her – she had to be what, seven? eight? only, and it made it feel more like a conversation now that he wasn’t towering over her.

“So what’s he like normally then? Is he… not a happy person?”

He was being nosy. He was prying. Rebecca had every right to refuse to answer. But… Zach was curious. What she said implied a change in his behavior, that he had made a difference, and that just couldn’t be true. He was just a bitter ex-soldier dealing with PTSD. Hardly anything about that would result in a person that could make someone else happy.

“He’s tried to be happy a lot in the past, but I could tell he wasn’t. His happy faces looked like ouches.”

“That all changed when he met you though. His happy faces don’t look like ouches anymore.”

She stumbled over her words a lot, she had only really learned to talk somewhat properly recently, still absently using her hands to gesture and sign as she talked. But she looked at the tile floor, fiddling with the hem of her dress before looking back at the other.

“Can I braid your hair one day?”

iiregularhunter:

It was a quick sign, but one that Zach easily picked up on. Oh– right. Xav had made mention of one of his kids being deaf. Or… apparently mostly deaf, if implants could help her.

‘Going out sounds so stuffy and formal-’ His signing was a bit rusty so Zach had no doubt he had made a few mistakes, but hopefully the general context would make itself known.

“Haha… yeah, I am, I guess?” A shrug as he reached back, nervously rubbing at the back of his neck. “I mean we’ve been going on dates so…”

Was he… was he really trying to explain and justify his relationship with Xav to one of his children?

Vibrant blue eyes went wide as she saw the signs the other used. She looked like he had made her entire day just by using sign language, even if he was rusty.

She softly squealed in excitement and delight.

“I’m glad! He’s been really happy lately!”

iiregularhunter:

@deafenedchampion

He grimaced before forcing a smile.

Right. How many kids did Xav have

“Uh. Hey there.” Was he… supposed to be… getting to know her? Sure, they had been dating for two months now and he had briefly spoken with Tomoe and Aerin, but… was this really the ‘meet your kids’ point?

“I’m…. Zach.” And I bang your dad-

Rebecca stared for a good minute or so before signing a quick hello, before holding up a finger in a ‘wait a moment please’. She reached up to her ears to turn on her hearing aids so she could actually respond at a normal volume.

“Hi, I’m Rebecca. You’re going out with Dad?”

This was the guy who was making her dad really happy? Well, she’d definitely never rib him for his taste in dudes ever again. Somehow though she thought the other probably wouldn’t appreciate that she thought he looked cool.

Absently, she wondered if he’d let her braid his hair… It looked soft.
